First Day of School for Sacred Heart

It’s the first day of school for Sacred Heart today. Brett is going into third grade and Abby is going into 8th (hence the fingers). It’s a big year for Abby because it’s her last year at Sacred Heart with graduation in June.

I didn’t take an outside picture like I traditionally take because the weather is just dreadful. It’s rained non-stop since Monday evening.

Last Day at Sacred Heart

It’s that time of the year and everyone in the house (aside from me) is counting down the days until the end of the school year.  Jean, Brett and Abby are all done on Thursday the 16th and Jake is done on Friday the 17th.

Today was the last day of school at Sacred Heart and Brett and Abby both did very well.   Aside from bringing home excellent report cards, they each won an individual award and were recognized in front of the student body.

Brett won the Religion Award in his class for the second year running.

Abby won the award for the highest grade point average in the 7th grade, also for the second year running.

Great job to both of you!  Now it’s time to look forward to summer.

Sacred Heart Graduation Party at the Azar’s

Party week continued Saturday at the Azar’s.  This time it was the Sacred Heart 8th Grade Class Party, which was held at the Azar’s, who were gracious enough to accommodate about a bazillion of us.

Jake and Frankie Chicken Fighting:

The party was open to the kids and their families, so as you can imagine at a Catholic outing, there were a ton of kids everywhere.  The Azar’s have a beautiful house with a fantastic setting in the back with a pool to die for.

The party was catered by Lori Howarth, who did a phenomenal job of whipping everything together.  Originally we were looking to have the party catered, but after shopping around Lori decided it would be much cheaper if she went ahead and prepared a couple of dishes (pulled pork and baked ziti) and relied on the rest of the families to provide all the extras (fruit, salads, appetizers, and desert).    I wanted to thank Lori for doing such a good job of handling the logistics.

The party started at 3 pm, and the kids spent the bulk of the daylight hanging out in the pool with each other.  I don’t know the exact count, but at least 20 of the 31 students made it to the party, which is a really great turnout.  With all the siblings also invited, there was one point where we counted 34 kids in the pool at once.  Heck, it was so warm that day that many of the parents also took a dip (including your’s truely, who never gets into a pool).

Old People into the Water:

Luckily for Abby, there were two girls and one boy from her class who were there, so she had somebody to hang with.  Brett didn’t have anyone from his, but he still managed to keep himself amused the entire time.  I was amazed at how long both of them hung by the pool.  Brett stayed in the water until almost 9, at which point he joined the 8th graders to play Manhunt (where he was thrilled to be the jail guard) and we had to pull Abby out of the water at 11 as we were heading home.  She put in almost an 8 hour day hanging in the pool.

Abby Diving into the Pool:

Thanks again to JP and Madelyn (I hope I spelled that correctly) who were gracious enough to open up their house to all of us.  I know the children enjoyed themselves and I can’t think of a better day for them to celebrate then the one they had.

Jake’s 8th Grade Graduation

Wednesday night was Jake’s Graduation from Sacred Heart.  It’s hard to believe it’s been 9 years since he was a tiny little thing going into Kindergarten.  I remember his second day of school was 9/11, and how we frantically had Jean run into school to pick him up within minutes of him getting to school.  I know that’s a weird memory to bring up, but time sure does fly.

Graduation was at 6 pm, and it was a nice little distraction to have with the recent passing of my brother Jeff.  Jake had a nice turnout to see his big day, with Gran and Pop Wynne, Grandmom Phil, my sister Kate, my brother Casey, Alexandra, and Dottie with Mikey and Emily.

We had a nice ceremony in the church and we had dinner immediately following over in the gym.  The service was really nice, although Jake got slighted during the awards presentation.  Part of the ceremony is they honor all of the students who received honors during the last trimester.  Jake had gotten first honors in the first trimester and second honors in the second, so it’s safe to say that Jean and I were mildly surprised not to hear his name called with the others.

As we sat fuming in our seats, we decided not to rip into him on his big day and we were going to wait until the next day to make an issue out of it.  My nephew Mike was sitting next to Jean, and he sensed she was disappointed that Jake didn’t make honors.  He offered up that he didn’t get honors either because of ILA and that it’s not that big of a deal to miss because of one subject.  :)

After dinner, the kids were presented with their report cards and Jake came running back to us to show that he did indeed have the grades required to make second honors, with his lowest grade being an 86.  Jean went up to the principal to show her, and Mrs. Mooney ran into the office to print out an honors certificate to present to Jake, which she did by stopping the music and making an announcement over the loudspeaker in front of the whole group.

All of his classmates were gathered around him as she announced it, and they started jumping up and down on his back to help him celebrate.  It was really cool, because Jake ended up getting more notice for his grades than if he would have just been recognized during the graduation ceremony.
